First of all what does Rue 909 mean? Is it something French or is it a place? I had never come down here since Urban Sushi was replaced by Rue 909, although I walked by it all the time. It’s something about the name… It doesn’t sound very sushi or Japanese to me even when the word ‘sushi’ is next to it – or at least it doesn’t sound authentic Japanese. I don’t mean to be a purist – I just despise things that do not make sense.
So after 2 years I finally decided to see past the name by giving them a visit.
The menu on the wall is slightly different from Urban Sushi with some free style sushi rolls, but the daily specials are similar. But there are no prices on the wall! That is inconvinient for especially new customers. Who has time to flip through your menu or ask a bunch of questions during busy lunch hours?
I ordered the Tuesday special: Tuna Sashimi Salad, California Roll, and Miso Soup for $9.50, which in my opinion, was a great lunch combo that included a few most common dishes in any Japanese sushi joint. I was handed a small beeper device instead of being told a number for order pickup. Does that mean it would take a while and I should take a walk around the block?
As I was waiting I saw the staff carrying out the lunch where to order valium online sets for eat-in customers. The bento boxes or sushi plates were actually quite nice and presentable. Also the portion looks huge! They seem to have nailed presentation and value. I was anxious for the most important test: taste!
Yes, my lunch was beautifully presented even in a to-go box, although the California roll looked a little rough – not the cleanest knife skill I’ll say. Miso soup was okay, but I felt weird finding bits of carrots in it. California roll tasted adequate but I got a kick of flavours – not a spicy kick but a strong seafood-y taste that was hard to describe. Tuna sashimi was fresh, the touch of massago was lovely, and the amount of spring mix was generous. The was a strong smell of garlic from the salad dressing set aside, reminding me a garlic vinegar dip for Chiu Chow braised duck, which was totally random. However the dressing itself tasted very subtle.
I probably have to try more of their food especially sushi to decide if they are good. For this lunch alone, I would give them a ‘Passed’ on the taste test, and a ‘Decent’ on the value.
